The Granary at Fawsley is a great base for family days out, and family-friendly activities in Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire and Warwickshire.
With our convenient location, parents have the broadest range of activities for children of all ages. The expansive lawn in front of our Tearoom is tailor made for children’s games – letting little ones use up bags of energy, whilst you sit back on the terrace and sample a refreshing drink. Our country location means you’re never far from an accessible footpath, either. Or, if your children are a little older, some spectacular hiking trails across the Fawsley Estate.
If you like theme parks, Northamptonshire’s Wicksteed Park presents 147 acres of lakes and parklands, and 40 rides and attractions – including Rocky River Falls, Waterchute, Train, and Double Pirate ship. Wicksteed Park even boasts the largest free playground in the UK. Children of all ages will be enthralled by Woburn Safari Park – home to elephants, sea lions, giraffes, lions, tigers and lots of other amazing beasts. The park is also home to Woburn Golf Club, and the stately home of Woburn Abbey – making it popular with children and parents alike.
Stay with your dog
The Granary Hotel is completely dog-friendly, with drinking facilities and access to an outside hose to wash them down after a mucky exploration – ask at reception for a copy of our walking guides, we have walks suitable for dogs young and old.
We understand that you don’t want to leave your best friend behind when you take a break, go on holiday, or simply go out for the day. That’s why our staff are always ready to provide tips on walking routes for you and your dog, as well as other activities you can enjoy together.
As well as the Fawsley Estate walks you may want to take you dog over to Fineshade Woods, there you will find three marked trails through ancient woodland. You can also stop off at the Toplodge Visitor Centre which offers dog drinking facilities, a cafe, and picnic benches with thoughtfully-designed clips – marvellous for attaching dog leads.
The Granary welcomes cyclists, offering lots of space to lock up bikes. The rolling countryside around us is ideal for all fitness levels – and in many ways, Northamptonshire is a haven for cyclists. We are often faced with mountain bike cyclists making a midway pitstop to regain their energy before heading back across the Fawsley Estate. The National Byway cycle route enters Northamptonshire in the north of the county, and forms a 29 mile loop near to Oundle.
There are also two National Cycle Route paths in Northamptonshire. Route 6, the Brampton Valley Way, begins in Northampton – but also provides 14 miles of blissful rural cycleway, free from motor vehicles. Route 50 stretches through a number of charming Northamptonshire villages, passing close to Fawsley along the old Daventry to Braunston railway line – the old railway providing fine service to cyclists from near and far.
A variety of off-road cycle trails wind their way through the beautiful woodland at Fineshade. Bike hire is available on site, from Rutland Cycling, and there are trails for families. Fineshade Woods also boasts the renowned Wakerley Red Route – 6 kilometers of turns and twists to challenge even the most experienced off-road rider.
It is easy to enjoy a heritage break at The Granary at Fawsley. Guests are within an hour’s drive from some of England’s most historic locations. The Granary at Fawsley itself is a historic gem. The main hotel is a Grade II Listed building, complete with carefully renovated 17th Century features, still visible today. From your room in The Granary at Fawsley, you are footsteps away from the country estate that belongs to Fawsley Hall – once host to Queen Elizabeth the first. Emerging from one of the many pathways that carries walkers from The Granary through the Fawsley Estate’s private grounds, you can see the splendour of the Hall’s Tudor and Gothic architecture in impressive detail.
A rich trove of treasures awaits those willing to drive a short distance from The Granary – in some cases, no more than ten minutes. Like Warwick Castle, Canons Ashby House, Stowe Gardens, and the imposing stately home of Althorp – the official residence of The Earl and Countess Spencer, and family home to Diana, Princess of Wales.
